Short-CV

After finishing his studies in Technical Chemistry, Hannes obtained his PhD from TU Wien in 2014. Inspired by the emerging field of bioorthogonal chemistry, he then joined the lab of Prof. Ralph Weissleder at the Massachusetts General Hospital & Harvard Medical School as a postdoctoral fellow funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF, Schrödinger Fellowship). In 2016, Hannes returned to TU Wien supported by the FWF (Schrödinger return phase) as an independent young principal investigator. Hannes currently leads the group ‘Molecular Chemistry & Chemical Biology’ at the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry. His team mainly focuses on the development of bioorthogonal tools and reactions for in vivo chemistry, diagnostic tools, medical imaging, and theranostic applications.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

  • Bioorthogonal Chemistry
Development of new chemical tools and reactions to advance the field of click, bioorthogonal & in vivo chemistry; Enhancing bioorthogonal tools by unraveling the underlying molecular mechanisms
  • Diagnostic tools - in vitro assays
Design of substrates, methods and strategies for LC-MS/MS based diagnostics (e.g. newborn screening of rare diseases), and development of assays for therapeutic drug monitoring (e.g. 'last resort' antibiotics)
  • Diagnostic tools - in vivo medical imaging
New diagnostic imaging strategies based on in vivo click chemistry (pretargeted molecular imaging, development of bioorthogonal tools radiolabeled with PET nuclides, e.g.fluorine-18)
  • Bioorthogonal drug targeting strategies
Development of new paradigms to safely and selectively deliver and/or activate drugs in target tissue/cells by applying new bioorthogonal strategies
  • Radiotheranostics
Combination of diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides to design bioorthgonal theranostic strategies
